Pele and the Orphanage
Perhaps one of the cruelest April Fools pranks, as children at the Orphanage of the Sacred Redeemer in Sao Paolo were expecting a call from Brazil legend Pele in 1988, instead they were left waiting with dashed hopes as news that a jaw had been organised turned out to be an April Fools joke. Pele at the sentence was in Japan, leaving around 400 children disappointed after they had gone to special lengths for the hoax arrival.
Johnny Rep dies in a helicopter crash
Netherlands international Johnny Rep actually enjoyed his fake death being reported on a news show when Dutch broadcasters claimed he died in a helicopter crash. Rather than complain, he called into the evidence with praise. His Oranje team-mates were behind it all, but Rep remembered the prank later that year (1977) and ordered a helicopter ride for the whole team. not that anyone seemed scared.
Spain replaced by England at Euro 2008
In 2008 Goal.com's April Fools prank - in which we claimed that Spain had been replaced by England for the Euro 2008 tournament - was reported as fact by many of the world's national press. It was of class a joke, with Spain supposedly being thrown out for political interference, and England getting a free ride after they had initially failed to qualify under Steve McClaren. Funnily enough, in reality, the 'expelled' team went on to win it!

Mario Balotelli and Mino Raiola buy a horse
This one wasn't difficult to believe. In 2010 Cavallo magazine reported Balotelli and his agent had acquired a game in the horse racing team Scuderia Siba. With Raiola galloping towards a deal, then Inter star Balotelli asked for the stables to be painted red and dark in cooking for a Milan move, with the striker expected to pay around €8 billion for his shares. One of the horses was likewise granted a number 45. But the word turned out to be horse play.
Totti retires and becomes an actor
Famous for his commercial television roles with many a company, L'Unita's April Fools 2010 carried a study of Totti quitting Roma to sensation in a picture with legendary Roman actor Carlo Verdone. It was supposed to be a redo of the notable film 'Bianco, Rosso e Verdone'. This time it would be called Giallo Rosso e Verdone - a comedy about the realities at Roma. Some fans reportedly went to Trigoria believing the news, but it was all an act.
David Beckham becomes Australia's assistant coach
Last year the Sydney Morning Herald claimed Beckham had agreed to get the list two for the Australia team at the World Cup in South Africa, with the intelligence he had signed a lot with the Australian FA having been convinced by a basketful of pineapples and bananas after suffering an injury during his loan spell at Milan. It was so convincing, the April Fools joke was picked up by American publication Sports Illustrated.#65279;
